Program Overview

TEP's Volunteer Monitoring Program began in 1997 to characterize bacteria concentrations is the Tillamook Bay Watershed.  Since its inception, volunteers have braved wind and rain, sleet and snow, to collect 15,000 water samples from the Miami, Kilchis, Trask, Tillamook, and Wilson Rivers. Samples are collected twice a month from forty-three locations in the watershed and analyzed for E. coli bacteria at the TEP laboratory.

Based on information gathered in the aforementioned programs, TEP can confidently state which stream reaches currently meet State bacteria standards, and which streams are in violation.  At these same locations, TEP has determined whether bacteria concentrations are increasing or decreasing.
