SUMMARY:Whale Watching at Elk Flats
DESCRIPTION:To round-out Oregon’s whale watching week\, we’re gather at Elk Flats to check out these magical creatures as they migrate!\n\n\nNorth Coast Land Conservancy (NCLC) and Tillamook Estuaries Partnership (TEP) invite you to join us on Saturday\, March 29th from 9am-10:30am to get a glimpse at the Spring gray whale norhtbound migration! We will begin our hike at Elk Flats Trail\, off of Highway 101 and take the trail out to “Devil’s Cauldron” \n \nThe hike out and back is approximately 1 mile and there is an elevation gain of 300 feet. The trail is often bursting with plant life so wearing long-sleeve clothing and sturdy shoes is recommended. Pictures will be posted to the Explore Nature Know Before You Go resource page so you can properly prepare for the conditions of this trail. \n \nThe parking lot is an unassuming gravel lot just south of the Short Sand beach parking lots. We recommend arriving early to secure parking and if you are planning to meet people there\, to park in the southern Short Sand beach parking lot (where bathrooms are located) and carpooling to the Elk Flats trailhead. \n \nDuring this event\, we will be using scopes and binoculars to look for whales and the abundance of other life that exists in the waters and among the trees. NCLC and TEP staff will speak to our work in the region and the importance of whales for our climate and the marine ecosystems. We can’t wait for you to join us during Oregon’s Whale Watch week!

SUMMARY:23rd Annual Children's Clean Water Festival
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer to support a Tillamook County tradition with another class of local 4th-grade students! \nYou are invited to the 23rd annual Children’s Clean Water Festival (CCWF) on Tuesday\, March 19th\, 2024 at Twin Rocks Friends Camp in Rockaway\, OR. Since 2001\, over 6\,000 students have participated in this annual event sponsored by TEP. This spring\, we hope you will join us for the fun Tillamook County tradition. \nLast year’s CCWF was a tree-mendous triumph! Students learned about king tides and Western Snowy Plover\, sculpted macroinvertebrates using modeling clay\, traveled through the water cycle as rain drops\, and more. When asked about their experience exploring a tidepool touch tank\, one student wrote\, “Today I learned that when sea cucumbers are scared\, they throw up their innards.” In total\, over 300 students\, teachers\, and chaperons from six different schools attended. To support all these students\, TEP recruited 83 volunteers for the 2023 CCWF. \nIn order to make this year’s festival an even bigger success\, we need volunteers just like you to fill a variety of roles. Whether you are keen to lead an activity\, or prefer to stay behind the scenes\, we have opportunities for you to help in a way that utilizes your skills and expertise. \nIf you are interested in volunteering\, please click here to fill out the CCWF 2024 Volunteer Application that is available on our website.

SUMMARY:Crabbing Workshop and Cooking Demo
DESCRIPTION:Join Tillamook County Wellness and Tillamook Estuaries Partnership for our second Four seasons of Foraging event!\n\n\nTillamook County Wellness and Tillamook Estuaries Partnership bring you part 2 of Four Seasons Of Foraging! Throughout the year we will co-host 4 events highlighting the unique foraging opportunities coastal Oregon provides. \n \nJoin us and local educator Alanna Kieffer from Shifting Tides LLC at the Historic US Coast Guard Boathouse for a day of crabbing! Dive into coastal ecology and oceanography along the Oregon Coast while learning how to set and throw crab pots. Gain a deeper appreciation of all things that make Dungeness crab such a special and sustainable food source in Oregon. You will learn how to ID different types of crabs\, crabbing limits\, seasons\, and much more! This is a free event and registration will be capped at 20 attendees. \n \nAlthough we’ll be along a pier and near the boathouse\, please wear appropriate footgear (e.g. tennis shoes\, rainboots\, or other hiking footwear). The Event will happen rain or shine (unless thunder-storming). If the weather looks “iffy” please bring a rain poncho\, jacket and hat. Please be prepared for any and all types of weather\, the Oregon Coast is not predictable and we will be fully exposed to the elements. The boathouse is sheltered but NOT heated and the dock is not covered. There’s a 100% chance you will get wet during this class! There is a bathroom in the Boathouse\, dogs are not allowed. \n \nWhat to bring: \n\nYou will need a bag (mesh\, reusable grocery bag works great\, or even plastic bag)\nA cooler with ice to transport your harvest home (if we catch lots of crabs!)\nA water bottle\, snacks and any other refreshments you may want during the Event. Personal medications and sunscreen are also recommended.\n\n \nShellfish permits ** For this demo and tasting of crab at the boathouse – folks do not need to buy a shellfish license. *IF* we catch enough crabs that there are plenty for people to take any home\, people would need to have a shellfish license to take crabs home with them. It is not guaranteed that we will catch enough crabs for this. But a yearly shellfish permit for OR residents is 10$ and 30$ for non-residents and would be good until the end of 2024 if you would like to purchase one just in case permits can be obtained online from ODFW\, please do so before class\, and should be available on the app on your phone for easy access incase needed. \n \nAccessibility Level: We will be walking on a boardwalk over the TIllamook Bay. The boardwalk is uneven and can be slippery. The parking lot is medium sized-gravel. There are stairs and a ramp to reach the boardwalk. There are multiple transitions between the gravel and ramp\, crossing train tracks\, crossing the uneven boardwalk. Please see pictures below for more information on whether this event is accessible for you. If there is any other information we can provide or accommodations we can help with\, please email us at info@tbnep.org or call our office at 503 322-2222. \n \nThis is an Explore Nature Tillamook Coast event. Explore Nature is sponsored in part by Tillamook Coast Visitors Center. \n \nSpecial Instructions to access the event venue: Turn left off Hwy 101 onto 12th street.
