DESCRIPTION:Join TEP and Oregon Shores for a guided walk to celebrate TEP’s adoption of Nedonna Beach as part of Oregon Shores’ Adopt-A-Mile Program!\n\n\nEvent Description: \nJoin us on February 21st from 10am – Noon as we celebrate TEP’s adoption of Nedonna Beach\, Mile 295 of Adopt-A-Mile Program hosted by Oregon Shores.Throughout the year\, TEP will host Mile Meetups here as part of the Explore Nature Program to monitor Nedonna Beach and submit mile reports to Oregon Shores. We are looking forward to taking on the task of monitoring a piece of coastline that is situated so close to TEP’s critical habitat restoration and Oregon Shore’s conservation advocacy…and we hope you join us in this effort! \nRegistration not required but please sign up if you would like reminder emails and updates about event changes. \nOn February 21st\, we will be meeting at the Nehalem Bay South Jetty Parking Lot. Parking is free and there is a non-ADA accessible porta-potty on site. Pictures of the parking lot and coastline will be posted on the ‘Know Before You Go‘ Page on the Explore Nature website. \nAt the Mile Meetup\, attendees will have the opportunity to: \n\nLearn about the Adopt-A-Mile Program\nLearn the protocol used to monitor and report on a CoastWatch Mile\nHave access to recorded online training\nBe eligible to adopt their own mile of the Oregon Coast after participating in this event.\nLearn about other community science programs CoastWatchers engage in as they walk their miles.\n\nEvent Accessibility: \nAccess to the beach at the north and south ends of this mile requires walking through uneven surfaces and over dry sand. There are occasional access points to the road in the event that someone is unable to complete the mile walk. The only restroom facility is a porta potty at the north end of the mile. \nAbout the Adopt-A-Mile Program: \nThe Adopt-A-Mile Program engages people in documenting Oregon’s sandy beaches and rocky shores for natural and human-caused changes\, wildlife\, and phenomena. Volunteers adopt a mile of the Oregon Coast to observe seasonally. The program offers education about shoreline ecology and natural history and opportunities to contribute data to community science. \nTEP’s Selection of Mile 295: \nTEP has chosen to adopt Mile 295\, just south of Nehalem Bay\, because of its proximity to Jetty Creek- the site of a recent TEP restoration project. In 2025\, TEP received funding from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB) to construct 14 channel-spanning large wood placements in order to support the habitats of ESA-listed coho salmon\, chum salmon\, and coastal cutthroat trout.The project was successfully completed and added 0.7 miles of critical habitat. \nConnection to Oregon Shores’ Work: \nNedonna Beach is also the site of an Oregon Shores appeal to the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA) challenging a Nedonna Waves development in this fragile and unique wetland which would also threaten Rockaway Beach’s backup aquifer. While LUBA sided with Oregon Shores on all accounts\, the case is still pending and back in LUBA. The initial LUBA ruling underscores not only the importance of upholding land-use protections but also the important role that community scientists continue to play in monitoring the coastline.

Feel free to drop by any time during this period for some crafting! \n \nYou can write a love letter to your local estuary\, make valentines for people you love\, create art with the supplies that will be available\, and collage to your heart’s content. \n \nWe will have drawing\, coloring\, and writing materials as well as paper\, postcards\, and limited collaging supplies. Feel free to bring your own materials as you wish! \n \nLNCT\, TEP\, and WEBS represent the three local estuaries in Tillamook County: Nehalem Bay\, Tillamook Bay\, and Netarts Bay. Each organization will have a staff member or volunteer present and will have a display showcasing the work that we do to care for our watersheds. Leave your valentine to be showcased by your local estuary\, or take it home to display or give to someone in your life! \nBay City Arts Center is an accessible building for those with mobility devices. Throughout the year we co-host 4 events highlighting the unique foraging opportunities coastal Oregon provides. \nJoin us and local native plant expert Asa Skinner from Tillamook Estuary Partnership’s Native Plant Nursery on Whalen Island for an afternoon learning to forage and about local ethnobotany! This workshop will introduce attendess to the basics of finding and identifying berries. Huckleberries are known to be ready to harvest from this area at this time of year but there are no guarantees! \n  \nSpecial Instructions to access the event location: There is free parking by the vault toilets. \n  \nPlease be prepared to walk about 2 miles on a trail. Hiking boots or ankle supporting footwear is recommended. There are toilets at the entrance. This event will happen rain or shine! Please be prepared with cold weather gear or rain gear depending on the forecast. \n  \nThis is a free event and registration will be capped at 20 attendees. \n  \nAccessibility Level: We will be walking on an unpaved trail with potential off-trail walking to find berries. Parking lot is also unpaved and vault toilets are not accessibility rated. DESCRIPTION:Support experiential STEAM education opportunities for Tillamook County K-12 students by becoming a volunteer STEAM Coach! \n\n\nThis Volunteer STEAM Coach Training is for new and returning volunteers who want to support environmental education school programs for Tillamook County students during the 2025-26 school year. \nAcross the county\, a partnership of 20 local organizations works together to provide various STEAM (science\, technology\, engineering\, art\, mathematics) programs to Tillamook County K-12 students. Together\, the TC STEAM Partnership offers students numerous experiential education programs including environmental science field trips\, farm-to-table school gardens\, science fairs\, cultural programming\, research projects\, professional development\, and more. Each year\, hundreds of students participate in these programs\, which are made possible by volunteer STEAM Coaches. Learn more about the TC STEAM Partnership here. \nIn order to offer these community-enriching programs\, the TC STEAM Partnership needs volunteer STEAM Coaches to fulfill numerous volunteer roles. STEAM Coaches are people who believe all students should be able to learn about STEAM subjects through educational experiences that are hands-on and inquiry-based. \nSTEAM Coaches don’t need to be experts\, they just need to be passionate about helping students learn! We look forward to seeing you at our next training. \n\n\n\n\nThis training will include an orientation session for new STEAM Coach volunteers\, a catered lunch social\, and hands-on demonstrations of upcoming field trip activities. \n\n\n\n\nFor questions about this training or if you cannot make it but would like to learn about future opportunities\, please contact danielle@tbnep.org \n\n \n  \nREMINDERS: The 0.2-mile walk along the pier from the 12 Street Parking Lot to the Boat House takes a few minutes. Please plan ahead to arrive inside the Boat House for our 9am start time. You can view photos of the ramp\, pier\, and walkways leading to the boathouse here under the “Garibaldi Boathouse” section. \nDress in warm layers. The Boathouse does have standing heaters that will be set up throughout the meeting space; however\, it can still be chilly inside the building until the sun heats up the room\, provided that it isn’t a cloudy day.

DESCRIPTION:It’s snowy plover season! Join us at Sitka Sedge to spot the only avian species to exclusively nest directly on the PNW sand dunes!\n\n\nSitka Sedge is an incredible natural area consisting of tidal marsh\, mudflats\, dunes\, forested wetlands\, and uplands…but one of the greatest parts of this landscape is often hard to spot! Western Snowy Plovers\, the only shorebird that regularly breeds on Oregon beaches\, can be found on the sandy beach here year-round.. South Sand Lake Spit is a historic nesting site for this threatened shorebird and one of five Snowy Plover Management Areas on Oregon’s north coast. Cara Gates\, Bird Alliance of Oregon’s Coastal Community Science Biologist\, will guide plover-spotting on the beach and share about this bird’s breeding biology\, habitat\, and conservation story.  \nThis natural area is also undergoing restoration efforts to support coho salmon habitat and allow for increased flood protection. While strolling out to the beach\, Tillamook Estuaries Partnership’s Community Engagement Coordinator\, Danielle Maillard\, will speak about the importance of restoration efforts in the regions and TEP’s role in supporting healthy estuaries. \nThis walk involves walking on uneven\, sandy terrain with exposed roots. Be sure to visit the Explore Nature Know Before You Go page to see pictures of the venue to assess accessibility level. Prepare to be on the beach for 1-2 hours and bring your optics to look for plovers. We will also have some standard binoculars for you to borrow during the event and a spotting scope to share views from \nDistance: 3 miles roundtrip. \nElevation changes: 25 ft. \nTerrain: gravel trail including uneven areas with tree roots; wet and dry sand\, at times uneven. \nExposure: full sun\, with partial shade for forested section of beach access trail. \nPacing: slow. \nRestroom at parking area. \nFree public parking in day-use lot. There is no cell service in the parking lot\, trail\, or beach.

DESCRIPTION:Come explore beaver habitat and learn about the intersection of these ecosystem engineers and salmon health. It’ll be a dam good time.\n\n\nLeave it to beavers to manipulate their habitat in a manner that allows salmon and other species to flourish! On the evening of August 7th\, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Beaver Conservation Biologist\, Conrad Ely\, will lead an exploration around Alder Creek Farm to examine beaver habitat and speak to the importance of this species for ecosystem health in Oregon. \nDuring this event\, you will learn to identify beaver activity and their favored tree species\, as well as understanding how beavers contribute to the health and well-being of salmon and other species that rely on riparian areas. \nThis event is hosted by Lower Nehalem Community Trust\, Tillamook Estuaries Partnership\, and ODFW\, and will take place at LNCT’s Alder Creek Farm in Nehalem. \nDirections/Farm Parking: Traveling south from Manzanita\, turn right onto Underhill Ln and continue (please do not exceed 10mph) to the end of the lane. Following signage for the farm\, you will continue along a gravel path until you reach a house opposite a grassy field. Please park in the field. \nThings to bring: \n\nSturdy\, closed toed shoes as we will be walking on uneven terrain\nPants or something that covers your legs as we will be walking through brush and you want to be protected from the bugs and pokey plants!\nWater and sunscreen\n\nAccesibility Information: \nDuring the event\, we will be walking on uneven terrain and along the riverbank. SUMMARY:Invasive Species Removal at Clay Myers
DESCRIPTION:It’s beautiful\, but it’s damaging! Come out and protect native species by trimming back invasive scotch broom at Clay Myers Natural Area.\n\n\nScotch broom is an invasive species that outcompetes native plants by taking the water\, nutrients\, and sunlight they need to survive. This highly-flammable\, aggressive shrub reproduces by seed and requires consistent management. \nOn May 18th from 9am-12pm\, Tillamook Estuaries Partnership and Nestucca\, Neskowin & Sand Lakes Watershed Council are partnering with Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) to remove the abundant scotch broom that has taken up at Clay Myers Natural Area. A ranger from OPRD will support volunteers in learning how to effectively cut back the plant\, mitigating the chance for reproduction. \nFeel free to join for the whole event\, or part of it. There will be signage at the entrance of the trail so folks know where the group will be. \nTEP will bring loppers and a weed wrench\, but feel free to bring your own removal materials as you wish. Other things to bring/wear include: \n\ngloves if you would like them \nlong pants and long-sleeved shirt (layers if it is hot)\nhiking boots or sturdy close-toed shoes\nWater bottle (we will have a jug for you to refill)\nSunscreen\, hat\, etc. in case it is a sunny day!\n\nDirections \nYou will turn off on Whalen Island Road from Sandlake Rd. and veer right towards Clay Myers Natural Area. You will park in the lot and we will be meeting in the grassy area near the restrooms. We will walk out on the south-most trail\, as you can see in the attached image\, and walk about a quarter mile to the location where we will be removing scotch broom. \n***THERE IS NO CELL SERVICE AT CLAY MYERS*** Please be prepared for this. \nAccessibility \nThere are some photos of this location on the Explore Nature’s Know Before You Go Resource page and more photos will be added of the trail prior to the event. The terrain is uneven and fairly sandy. SUMMARY:Whale Watching at Elk Flats
DESCRIPTION:To round-out Oregon’s whale watching week\, we’re gather at Elk Flats to check out these magical creatures as they migrate!\n\n\nNorth Coast Land Conservancy (NCLC) and Tillamook Estuaries Partnership (TEP) invite you to join us on Saturday\, March 29th from 9am-10:30am to get a glimpse at the Spring gray whale norhtbound migration! We will begin our hike at Elk Flats Trail\, off of Highway 101 and take the trail out to “Devil’s Cauldron” \n \nThe hike out and back is approximately 1 mile and there is an elevation gain of 300 feet. The trail is often bursting with plant life so wearing long-sleeve clothing and sturdy shoes is recommended. Pictures will be posted to the Explore Nature Know Before You Go resource page so you can properly prepare for the conditions of this trail. \n \nThe parking lot is an unassuming gravel lot just south of the Short Sand beach parking lots. We recommend arriving early to secure parking and if you are planning to meet people there\, to park in the southern Short Sand beach parking lot (where bathrooms are located) and carpooling to the Elk Flats trailhead. \n \nDuring this event\, we will be using scopes and binoculars to look for whales and the abundance of other life that exists in the waters and among the trees. NCLC and TEP staff will speak to our work in the region and the importance of whales for our climate and the marine ecosystems. We can’t wait for you to join us during Oregon’s Whale Watch week!
